UME magazine is an independent international architecture magazine edited, produced, published by the owners Haig Beck and Jackie Cooper. Between 1996 and 2007 were published 21 issues of EMU, until the magazine was passed to the format online, allowing free downloads of the specimens.
As they say on their website, the passage of the digital magazine makes you close the circle around EMU. In 1992 began as a small portfolio of hand-printed sheets and stored in a box. In fact, the first three editions of HEU were flyers, photocopying manuals, stored in a cedar box. They went on to a more careful editing and now readers can download the individual pages they want.
UME became digital with the intention of reaching a larger number of architects, teachers and students of architecture and thus also offer content for free. You can use these contents for teaching or for personal use provided that the authors name.
EMU focuses on drawings made by architects to build their designs. Usually focus on the working drawings in the sketch. The photographs, to show designs as abstract as possible be published in black and white. Each picture is processed digitally before being published to emphasize the design intentions.
Many architectural magazines are better known by their acronyms that his real name: AD, AR, BD, UA, AA, GA, VA ... so in 1996 the authors decided not to seek a descriptive name and an acronym search directly. So playing with the word "emu" I turned around and created the false acronym EMU. Typographically the three letters produced an asymmetrical balance that works in case sensitive. Then they discovered that EMU means "plum" in Japanese and "us" in Chinese (pidgin).
